Finding the perfect camping spot in Jim Thorpe is easy, whether you prefer tents, RVs, or cabins. Our favorite place to camp is the Mauch Chunk Lake Park, which offers a variety of campsites and recreational activities. We choose a cabin for the weekend that can sleep up to 6 people. There are double bunk beds in the back room and a full size bed in the front room. There are even electrical outlets so you can plug in some fans to keep the air flowing throughout the cabin.

There are bathroom facilities throughout the campground and the main one offers a few basic showers. The showers operate with a pull handle to turn the water on, so prepare for a quick rinse off after a day of swimming and hiking!

Activities to Enjoy During Your Stay

During our day, Mauch Chunk Lake Park, which is connected to the camping grounds, is one of our family’s favorite spots to enjoy the day. The kids love splashing and swimming in the clear lake, trying their luck fishing from the dock, and exploring the scenic trails that wind along the water’s edge. With beautiful views and activities for all ages, it’s the perfect place for a family adventure.

In addition to enjoying the activities offered at the lake, take some time to ride the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway. This ride was a beautiful way to take in the region’s stunning landscapes. The train wound its way along the river, offering breathtaking views of the gorge, forests, and historic landmarks. It was a relaxing and memorable experience the whole family enjoyed. Right next to the train station there is also a great ice cream shop that the kids enjoyed after the ride!

Evenings at the campsite were our favorite, gathered around the warm glow of the campfire. We cooked dinner over the flames, roasted marshmallows for gooey s’mores, and laughed through rounds of card games and glowstick dance parties! The crackle of the fire and the blanket of stars above made the perfect backdrop for sharing stories. It was the kind of simple, cozy fun that makes camping so special.

One thing we found surprisingly helpful during our camping trip was a portable potty—not glamorous, I know, but a lifesaver with little ones, especially for those late-night bathroom needs. Be sure to pack your essentials like a first-aid kit, insect repellent, and sunscreen. For cabin stays, we always bring night lights since it can get very dark, and a sound machine for the kids (and my husband) who prefer a gentle hum to the nighttime silence. Camping means packing a lot—food, sleeping gear, swimsuits, towels, and more—so make a detailed list ahead of time and check it twice to avoid forgetting anything.
