If you're spending a week on the Outer Banks, chances are you'll hit a day where the kids need a change of scenery, or the beach just isn't calling. That's where OBX Water Park comes in. It's a great day trip option and is right across the bridge on the mainland. Plan on 3–4 hours depending on crowd size, and you can still catch a sunset on the beach later.

We've visited a couple of times now, and each trip the kids have graduated to more daring slides. While the park is on the smaller side compared to other water parks, it still has a great variety of family slides, tube slides, body slides, and of course the lazy river and wave pool. Plenty to keep the kids entertained and having fun.

When to Go

We tend to visit mid-August, and crowds have never been an issue. Lounge chairs are easy to find and the vibe is relaxed. I can't speak to peak season, but the park does offer cabanas to rent and there are plenty of lounge chairs throughout the entire park, so be sure to walk around and find the perfect home base for your crew.

For the Little Ones

When you enter, the toddler area is off to the right, and it's a great spot to keep the little ones busy for hours. With water depths around two feet, it's a space where parents can actually exhale. There are lounge chairs and seating all around the perimeter, so you can stay close and keep eyes on your kids without hovering over them. Two lifeguards are stationed in the area as well which adds an extra layer of reassurance when you've got multiple little ones running in different directions.

If you'd rather be in the water to stay cool (who wouldn't?), there are shaded areas to stand so you're not baking in the sun while you supervise.

The four slides designed for the 3–5 crowd provide just the right amount of thrill for their age. Watch them discover their favorite as they'll climb those short steps over and over, testing each slide to determine which one is definitively the fastest. It's serious business. The slides also have a padded landing at the bottom, so they slide off to a soft finish. For the youngest ones not quite ready for slides, there's a small waterworks area where kids can splash around, fill and dump buckets, and spin different features through the flowing water. It keeps them just as entertained, just at ground level.

Life jackets are also available for kids — a simple but reassuring touch when you're juggling multiple ages at once.

For the Older Kids (and Honestly, the Adults Too)

The other side of the park has a solid lineup of single and double tube slides plus a few body slides providing enough variety to keep older kids rotating through all day.

But the real showstoppers are the two family rides. You've probably already spotted Rogue Waves from the road — it's the bold yellow and orange one that's hard to miss. The tube holds up to six people, so the whole family goes together. The ride itself is on the shorter side, but it ends with a big drop followed by a swooping rush up one side and back down. It delivers. My kids talked about it the rest of the day and how much I screamed the whole way down.

Right next to it is Queen Anne's Revenge, another family tube slide that's just as fun, minus the stomach-dropping finale. If you've got kids (or adults) who are a little more cautious about that big plunge, this is a great alternative that still gets everyone on the ride together.

The fact that both slides fit the whole family is what made them our favorites. No one sits it out.

The Classics

No water park is complete without the staples, and OBX Water Park delivers. There are two wave pools — a deeper one with larger waves for the big kids, and a smaller, shallower one in the toddler area. It's actually a great way to get in, get wet, and ready for more action. The lazy river is a perfect low-key option when everyone needs a breather between rides. There are two different entrances, with the main one in the middle of the park, and you'll find both double and single tube options along with fun water features throughout.

Food & Drinks

The dining is your classic water park fare consisting of burgers, pizza, chicken tenders, fries, and grab-and-go snacks. Nothing groundbreaking, but it gets the job done. In our family, the kids make a beeline for chicken fingers, fries, and ice cream, washed down with lemonade. Every. Single. Time.

What to Pack

A little prep goes a long way. Here's what I recommend throwing in the bag before you head out:

  • Towels. The park doesn't provide them, so don't leave these back at the rental. It's an easy one to forget.

  • Sunscreen. Obvious one to pack, easy one to forget to reapply. Don't let that summer sun get you!

  • Water shoes. The concrete gets scorching hot between rides. Either bring a pair, plan to speed-walk, or just stay wet; which, at a water park, is pretty easy to do.

  • A waterproof phone case. This is a must. You'll want to capture your kids flying down Rogue Waves, and a waterproof case means you can get right in on the action without the anxiety of a soggy phone.

  • A change of clothes. Nobody wants a wet swimsuit on the ride back to the beach house. Pack a dry outfit and you'll thank yourself later.

  • A refillable water bottle. The park has water refill stations throughout, so you can top off all day and skip paying for bottled water.

Tips Before You Go

A couple more things worth knowing before you arrive:

  • Parking is free. Always a win.

  • Lockers are available in different sizes to store your valuables while you're on the rides. It's well worth it for peace of mind.

  • Check tickets online ahead of time. If you're a family there to hit the rides and call it a day, the twilight pass might be worth a look at a discounted rate.

The Bottom Line

OBX Water Park is a solid addition to any Outer Banks vacation itinerary. It's not an all-day commitment, the little kids and big kids are both well taken care of, and the family slides make it genuinely fun for everyone, not just the kids. Whether you're looking to break up a long beach week or just need a change of pace, it's worth a few hours of your time.
